영국 극작가 톰 스토퍼드의 삼부작 대서사극 ‘유토피아의 해안’의 제3부 ‘구조(salvage)’가 링컨 센터 비비안 보먼트 씨어터에서 이달 18일부터 공연 중이다.
지난달 31일 프리뷰 공연을 선보였던 제3부에서는 제2부에 이어 등장인물들이 12년의 세월동안 런던과 제네바로 이동해 펼치는 내용을 담고 있다.
지난 2002년 트러버 넌 연출로 런던의 내셔널 씨어터에서 초연된 이 대서사극은 19세기 제정 러시아시대를 배경으로 지난 30년 이상을 유지해온 정치체제를 변화시키고자 투쟁하는 러시아 지식인들을 그리고 있다.
제1부 ‘항해(voyage)는 지난해 11월 모스크바, 상트페테르부르크를 비롯한 러시아 일대를 배경으로 공연되었고, 지난해 12월 공연된 제2부 ’난파(shipwreck)에서는 제1부의 내용에서 13년이 지난 후, 등장인물들이 모스크바를 떠나 파리, 드레스덴, 니스에서의 생활을 그렸다.
뮤지컬 ‘헤어스프레이 hairspray ’, ‘화려한 사기꾼 dirty rotten scoundrels ’를 연출한 바 있는 잭 오브라이언이 총 지휘를 맡은 이 작품에는 빌리 크루덥, 리차드 이스턴, 조쉬 해밀튼, 에단 호크 등 무려 44명이 출연하고 있다.
삼부작의 세트디자인은 밥 크로우일리, 스코트 파스크, 의상은 캐더린 주버가 맡았다. 조명디지인에는 브라이언 맥드빗, 케네스 포스너, 나타샤 카츠가 각각 1,2,3부에 참여했고 음악과 음향에는 마크 버넷이 맡았다.
한편, 올해 5월까지 순환 공연되는 이 삼부작을 단 하루동안에 관람할 수도 있다. 2월24일에서 5월 5일까지 매주 토요일마다 장장 8시간에 걸쳐 삼부작을 하루 동안 관람할 수 있는 특별한 날을 마련하고 있다.

salvage, the third and final part of tom stoppards trilogy the coast of utopia, opens feb. 18 at lincoln center theaters vivian beaumont theater.
salvage, which began previews jan. 31, follows the coast of utopia characters to london and geneva over the course of 12 years. according to the plays website, "as imperial russia is set adrift with the freeing of the serfs, alexander herzen and the revolutionaries in his circle look back from the vantage point of their exile in england at their dreams of overturning the tsar, at the paths taken and not, and at the russia of their memory."
the epic coast of utopia trilogy tells the story of a group of nineteenth-century russian intellectuals who debate politics and philosophy and struggle to change their political system over a 30-year period.
the first part of the trilogy, voyage, which opened nov. 27, is set in the russian countryside and in moscow and st. petersburg. part two, shipwreck, which opened dec. 21, begins outside moscow 13 years after the first part and follows the characters to paris, dresden and nice.
the three plays will be performed in rotation until the trilogy closes on may 13. there will be nine saturday marathons, in which all three parts are performed in one day: feb. 24, march 3, march 10, march 24, march 31, april 7, april 21, april 28 and may 5.
the eight-hour trilogy, directed by broadway veteran jack obrien (hairspray, dirty rotten scoundrels), boasts a cast of 44, including billy crudup, richard easton, jennifer ehle, josh hamilton, david harbour, jason butler harner, ethan hawke, amy irving, br?n f. obyrne and martha plimpton.
the play has sets by bob crowley and scott pask, costumes by catherine zuber, lighting by brian macdevitt (voyage), kenneth posner (shipwreck) and natasha katz (salvage) and original music and sound design by mark bennett.
obrien previously directed lcts productions of stoppards plays hapgood and the invention of love. lct also produced stoppards arcadia.
the coast of utopia premiered at the national theatre in london in 2002 in a production directed by trevor nunn.
